Technology Initiatives in the College of Business
The College of Business has established the requirement for laptop computer for our majors in the new undergraduate curriculum. The implementation of that policy has been viewed as an opportunity to enhance and extend a student’s learning environment & support both in and out of the classroom. In order to take advantage of this opportunity and based on our experience with laptops in our MBA and Executive MBA programs, the College has for Fall 2002 implemented web delivery of all UG core classes, created a web services and communications intranet, facilitated the purchase of laptops through the campus computer store, developed an UG software setup guide, opened a student laptop support center and provided laptop technology orientation sessions. Additionally, using Student Technology Fee funds, the college has upgraded its computer lab with work spaces for laptop users and the replacement of 60 old computers with 40 new desktop units and a better high speed and volume printer. We have started the downsizing of computer labs that have served us well for over a decade. These initiatives and accomplishments compliment the improving technology infrastructure and support on UT’s main campus. Those central services provided by the Office of Information Technology include a campus wide wireless network, technology training (both classroom and web based) and a call in help desk.
This means that the students in our new curriculum will be able to access course materials, communicate electronically, schedule advising appoints, take computer based training for technology use, print out their papers and submit assignments from anywhere on campus by using their laptop linked to the campus wireless network. Any classroom that a student is in potentially becomes a computer lab with a professor leading the class with a laptop and portable computer projector. It means that the student has enhanced learning opportunities both inside and outside of the traditional classroom. The combination of an innovative new undergraduate curriculum and a technology enhanced learning environment will add significant value to a degree from the College of Business Administration.
